SUPPORT OUR URGENT APPEAL FOR MILK

Babies born with cleft conditions in Ethiopia are in urgent need of baby milk powder, and specialist cleft feeding bottles. Before a baby can receive surgery for their cleft condition, they must meet key health indicators. However, 1 in 7 of the babies that come to Project Harar for treatment are malnourished and therefore not strong enough for surgery. This is due to the dual impact of having a facial disfigurement and poverty but also because newborn babies aren’t identified with cleft conditions early enough.

The milk powder and specialist feeding bottles are life-changing.

Babies born with cleft conditions have difficulties with breastfeeding as they cannot form a seal with their lips to create suction. This is not only dangerous for the baby, but also very distressing for the mothers, as their children become increasingly undernourished and they feel helpless in feeding them.

Baby Nafbeki arrived at YOOYYA hospital with his mother and was not strong enough to undergo surgery on his cleft lip.

After baby Nafbeki received milk powder from Project Harar, he returned to hospital and was strong enough to receive successful surgery on his cleft lip just one month later.
