Fedhesa’s Story
In August, we met one-year-old Fedhesa when he came for treatment at Wollega University Hospital. When he was born, his mother had no idea of what to do. She had no information about what a cleft condition was and didn’t know what the condition may change for her family.
Feeding her son was incredibly difficult and she needed to work out what to do. She searched for information, reached out to health care professionals, and explored every opportunity that could help Fedhesa receive the care he needed. With no guidance or resources, she had to find out herself the best course of action to take.
Beyond the practical struggles, she also faced emotional ones. She was terrified of judgement, prying questions, and discrimination. Because of this, they rarely left their home.
Finally, a health extension worker linked Fedhesa’s mother with Project Harar and she received information about the next programme to be held at Wollega University Referral Hospital.
Fedhesa received the treatment his mother had searched high and low for, and now his contagious smile is even brighter, changing his future forever.
