About Project Harar

Project Harar Project Harar is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing access to life-changing treatment for children with cleft lip and palate conditions and more complex facial disfigurements  in Ethiopia and building capacity within the health system. We have a team based in the UK and a team based in Ethiopia working together towards the same aims. With a history spanning over two decades, we are committed to breaking down barriers to access, raising awareness, and transforming the lives of those affected.

 

We work in close collaboration with Ethiopian health professionals, hospitals, and local communities, and are proud to partner with the Federal Ministry of Health to support and strengthen national surgical systems.

 

We are a small charity with a large impact — delivering meaningful, transformative care to some of the most marginalised populations in the world.

 

In 2025, we are leading a major complex surgical programme, bringing a team of UK medics to Ethiopia to deliver life-changing operations for individuals with severe and neglected facial conditions.

🔍 The Role

We are seeking a proactive and experienced Finance and Operations Consultant to work with our small, committed UK team. This flexible part-time role is ideal for someone who wants to make a tangible impact in the international charity sector.

 

Our team  is based at our Brighton co-working office, you’ll provide expert financial management services, support operational functions, and work closely with our team in the UK and Ethiopia.

 

This role is offered on a consultancy basis, and the successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own tax and National Insurance contributions.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Produce monthly management accounts and be proficient in Xero.

  2. Proficient in Excel.

  3. Provide expert financial management advice, including advising on policy development and compliance.

  4. Ensure robust policies and procedures are in place.

  5. Collaborate with the CEO and fundraising team to prepare and manage funding budgets.

  6. Monitor income, grant payments, and programme budgets (including liaison with the Ethiopia finance team).

  7. Confidently manage multiple currencies and related reporting.

  8. Prepare budgets and financial analysis for fundraising events.

  9. Advise on income tracking across fundraising platforms (e.g. JustGiving, Enthuse, etc.) ensuring reporting is accurate.

  10. Manage and submit Gift Aid claims in compliance with HMRC regulations.

  11. Advise on and implement oversee payroll and HMRC payments.

  12. Coordinate the annual audit and liaise with auditors.

  13. Provide operational support as needed.

👤 About You

We’re looking for someone with a strong financial background, a collaborative working style, and a passion for creating change through international development work.

You’ll bring:

  1. Significant experience in a charity finance role, with international exposure.

  2. Professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA–part or fully qualified, or minimum AAT Level 4).

  3. A solid understanding of financial legislation, charity SORP, and reporting standards.

  4. Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and reporting to leadership teams.

  5. Clear, confident communication skills (both written and verbal).

  6. Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  7. A willingness to support HR and operational functions where needed.
