Her and her twin sister were born at their local health centre where the midwife identified Abdurazak’s cleft condition at birth. In March 2026, Abdurazak and her mother arrived again at their local health centre to receive fortified milk powder in order for Abdurazak to continue growing before receiving cleft surgery. When Abdurazak was born in February, she weighed just 1.8 kilograms (or just under 4 pounds) and it was unlikely that she would survive had the midwife not been trained to identify cleft conditions. As such, when Abdurazak was born, the midwife at the health centre provided her mother with guidance on feeding her, fortified milk powder, and a specialist cleft feeding bottle. In March, when Abdurazak and her mother returned for a check-up, Abdurazak’s condition had improved greatly. During the check-up she was weighed, and she had nearly doubled in weight, now at 3 kilograms. We first met Mahir in August 2024 where he arrived with his mother seeking surgery for his cleft lip. However, he was unable to undergo treatment because he was underweight and malnourished. This nutrition programme greatly helped Mahir meaning he was able to return in November 2024 for the surgery on his cleft lip. Mahir’s mother told us; ‘I heard that a few people in our community had cleft cases and received treatment through Project Harar. They were cured successfully. We have no history of such a condition in our family, but it appeared in my son, Mahir. We tried to get treatment for him many times, but it was difficult due to a lack of money. Aklil is 3 years old and is the first child in the family with a cleft condition. As a result of having a child with such a condition, his mother told us how they no longer attend church or have a social life. ‘Before hearing about Project Harar we did not seek treatment for Aklil’s condition because we knew we didn’t have enough money. He was accompanied by his father his mother, and his sister. The family, who are farmers, live in Asosa Town. Obsa is the fourth child of his parents. The mother shared her experience of having a child with a cleft lip and how her husband’s family did not want her or the child back in their home because they thought it would be a burden to them and change their public image. She also said, “I was initially shocked but accepted it as a gift from God. My husband’s family rejected us due to perceived shame. We faced community stigma, supported only by my husband and a kind neighbour.” And Obsa’s father shared, “I was sad when I found our our child was born with a cleft lip. She then handed him over to me and when I saw him I cried, he was my first-born child and I could not control myself.
