Fikert and her son Fayisa are from a remote community in the East Wollega Zone, Oromia, their journey to Addis Ababa for Fayis's cleft lip surgery took two days. Fikert told us that their first child was not born with a cleft lip, but sadly they lost him within his first few months of life. When they had their second child, Fayisa, they were so worried and shocked, Fikirt said she did not consider he would survive because of his cleft lip.

Luckily, when the family took Fayisa to the nearest health facility in a nearby small town, the health worker told Fikert that treatment was available via Project Harar. Now Fayisa is treated Fikert told us she is not worried anymore and she is hopeful for his future.
