Last year we began expanding beyond Harar into even more remote and deprived parts of Ethiopia. The map shows that we are now reaching patients in both the north and south, including the mountainous region of Bale. The difficult terrain of this region adds to the challenge of finding patients in these remote areas, where 91% of the population are rural subsistence farmers and only 30% of adults can read and write. Many of our patients live more than 500km away from the capital city, Addis Ababa, where high quality medical care is available. The cost of this journey is the equivalent to the entire annual income of a coffee farmer and his family.
The need for our work in Ethiopia continues to grow, and with your support we aim to fulfill that need, expanding our vital services across the country helping young people with facial disabilities access life changing medical care.
