Cleft Programme

Cleft Programme

Our research has found that fewer than half of all children born with a cleft lip/palate ever attend school unless they receive medical care. This barrier is more severely felt the more severe the disability (only a quarter of children with both cleft lip and palate have been to school and many drop out). Facial disabilities like cleft lip and palate put up even more barriers for rural girls, only 30% of whom go to school prior to surgical repair. The parents of girls most often express concerns for the economic and marriage prospects of their daughters.

Project Harar Ethiopia provides access to surgery for over 500 children with cleft lip and palate condition. This process involves working with government health workers and volunteers to identify and transport these children to hospitals in Addis Ababa where they can access surgery. It also involves providing post-operative care, including speech therapy for those who need it.
